Freelancing - Agile Coaching and Development

from 2014 up to today

May 2023 - Oct 2023, Developed a Restaurant Point-of-Sales application for a customer in the United States with a fully remote team across the globe. Took the lead to redesign the payment flows to support more flows, reliably; and make the ui around payments performant.

Sep 2021 - Feb 2022, Developed and gave a series of Coding Dojos for the Rabobank. The participants practiced in pairs and as a mob with techniques such as TDD and mutation testing. This gave them new views on, and tools to work with software. They applied those in their daily work.

June 2021 - April 2023, Programming for the strategic on-line game Planets. A.o. redesigning the UI experience for mobile users.

2019 - now, Exploring programming languages e.g. Gleam and Elm. You can find my blog about gleam on this very site, or have a look at my own gleam packages, and my contributions to gleam stdlib and other packages

Sep - Dec 2018, Responsible for technical coaching at the LCM in Brussels. Besides coaching for scrum adaptation, I supported a team with restructuring and porting an application from Cobol to Java. At my own initiative, investigated testability of Cobol application and offered help with Design questions.

April 2017, done a CI/CD assessment at Cisco, Southampton, UK. My main conclusion was that testing was fine within modules, but there was nothing between modules. My recommendation to address that with automated integration tests has been implemented by the customer.

2016, Programming on the Global Order Tracking at Ford, Basildon, UK. Took the lead in replacing version control, build- and CI-tooling, which reduced the dependency on test-servers and shortened time to deliver new features. Did a database performance analysis, and solved the performance problems.

April 2015, Facilitated a Coach Retreat in the Netherlands.
2015, Agile Coaching at STC, Saudi Arabia.
  • Introduced User Stories to bring the designers, developers and testers together at an earlier stage, which brought huge reduction in time-to-delivery of features.
  • Built a testing framework to connect User Stories via Cucumber to the 'green screens' of the AS400 systems and RPG software.
  • Developed a two-day course for this testing framework and gave it several times to developers within STC.
  • Introduced Kanban with WIP limits, which made defect handling more predictable and faster.
  • Analyzed maintainability and extendability of AS400 applications.
Dec 2013, Lit the '14' in '2014' at the ball-drop on Times Square, New York at exactly 00:00:00 January first.

  • Applied Agile software development and Agile Architecting in a clinical trial that adhered to the Medical Device Directive.
  • Replaced the implementation of the medical UI which enabled (10x) faster development and testing.
  • Enabled Full-stack testing on the PCs of the developers, which increased testability and reliability.
  • Executed a System performance analysis and solved the bottlenecks.
  • Tested Research-code (MatLab), enabling usage of the ported (C#) version in the 2nd clinical trial.
